I keep reshaping my wide brim hat but half way through the day it begins to droop all around so that by 4pm I look like a scarecrow.
Anyone have recommendations for some spray-on stiffener or what not to help a hat keep its shape?

If you can't be near the hat you love, love the hat you're near. Repurpose it as a droopy hat. It's HC/PC. The Pennsylvania Gazette Philadelphia October 2. 1746 RUN away... down looking, and commonly wears his hat flapped down before; The Pennsylvania Gazette November 16, 1774 EIGHT DOLLARS Reward. RUN away....an old beaver hat, not cocked; The Pennsylvania Gazette November 2, 1774 RUN away....had on, when he went away, a narrow brimmed wool hat, not cockedJ.F.D. Smyth, "Tour In The United States of America, 1784" "....and on their heads a flapped hat, of a reddish hue, proceeding from the intensely hot beams of the sun." The Pennsylvania Gazette May 25, 1796 RAN AWAY.... it is supposed he wears a short white homespun coat, a cocked hat flopped down before, corduroy ribbed breeches, and white jacket. Spence

Spence has a good point. But, if it is stiff you want, shellac us the answer. Be careful, it seems easy to overdo. Mine is a little too stiff and thus a little too noisy when it scrapes brush. I'm sure I won't regret it in bad weather, but on a dry quiet day, it seems loud. I'll get back to you with the brand I used.

I used 7:1 alcohol to shellac and it never got to the stiffness was looking for I hadn’t considered it being too noisy if too stiff though

Spence, I found this interesting albeit not related to hats that droop “ corduroy ribbed breeches” Yeah, it's surprising to find what sounds like corduroy similar to the modern type at such an early time. I have references back to 1769 as 'corduroy'. Very similar, and also defined as a type of cloth is 'duroy', and I have references by that name back to 1731. Oxford English Dictionary defines duroy as a kind of lightweight woolen cloth used for mens' clothing, ribs or cords not mentioned. Another dictionary says duroy is an older form of corduroy. Spence

I used it straight and applied it with one of those sponge paint applicators. I did by a can of the same brand in a spray for touch ups, but haven't, and probably won't, need it.

Nock, It may be a risk not worth the trouble but I wonder if you could wash out some shellac with alcohol?

What kind of shellac are you guys using? I'm using the same bullseye Zinser shellac that Sicilian Hunter is. I have it in a spray can too.
