Not to steal anything from BH, I thought it would be fitting to show my progress on a tobaggon build. All the credit to BH for sparking my interest into building one of these very simple but important accoutrements. For the longest time I've honestly avoided many winter time treks into the forest besides stationary camps for the reason of traveling through snow, it's a bear let's face it... Especially with period kit. Something I've always wanted to build but haven't allotted time for, well that's changed. Time for snow shoes (will be a separate post) and the tobaggon. Having access to lots of rough sawn hardwood I actually decided on three hickory boards. Mainly because I find it offers more forgiveness when bending and given the familiarity I didn't hesitate. Each board was 8' x 1" cut both down to 6' which should yield a very usable finished tobaggon. Proceeded to plain each board by alternating sides until I reached my 1/4" thickness mark. I then thinned my rib or support boards to a thickness of 5/8". Next will be bending once a large vessel is made or procured. Stay tuned! Worth noting the above reference images come from several museums in Canada of surviving examples.
