I found that the bag I posted as, "craft store challenge bag," (or something to that effect) had become my favorite to work with and shoot from. This bag; But, the obviously inaccurate materials, primarily the modern cotton webbing strap) were bothering me. The fact I have been in a lazy funk and haven't made anything in a while was bugging me too. When I found some veg tan goatskin on sale I decided to recreate this bag with better materials.
Materials are: lightweight veg tan goat skin leather for the main bag, thin veg tan cowhide strap, metal button from The Quartermaster General, brass buckle I bought from a friend that I think came from Jas Townshend but my friend could get to me quicker, predyed and finished very lightweight cow leather edge binding, coconut shell buttons, stitched with Carriage brand hemp thread. NO dye was used on the bag or strap, just combinations of mink oil, neatsfoot oil and beeswax. What I used depended on location on the bag or strap. Leather was warmed in an oven on lowest setting during application.
I've included some comparison pics to the earlier bag, I'll shut up and let you look...
I wasn't happy with the lack of the edge binding on the flap compared to the earlier bag, So I unstitched the bottom seam on the flap (experiencing great evidence as to why a proper saddle stitch is superior, what a pain to remove), added the leather binding, and closed that seam back up,,,,
I found I really liked the hanging pocket and tried to recreate it,
Mistakes were made, I didn't plan the placement of that button for the pocket correctly.
Thanks for looking.

Nice straight stitching, did you just use a needle?

Nice straight stitching, did you just use a needle? Depending on location on the bag I used either an overstitch wheel or a pricking iron to lay out the line and spacing of my stitching. Then I use the standard 2 needle harness stitch or saddle stitch. I poke my holes as I go, occasionally poking 3 or 4 in advance, again, depending on location an situation on the bag.

Also, I tried to really concentrate on the technique of having the second needle come through the hole correctly regarding orientation. If the holes in my line of stitching are angled like this; ////////// if I am stitching left to right, I want my second needle to enter and come out of the hole above the 1st needle and thread. If I were stitching right to left I would want the second needle coming through at the bottom of the hole, below the 1st.
Hard to explain in writing, but once you see it and do it, it makes sense and looks so much better.

Nock, Really BEAUTIFUL piece of work !!! WELL DONE!!! Your "mistake" is hardly one at all and I think it adds a bit of character to the bag. I know that when we make something we do our damndest to make it perfect but there are always going to be traces of our humanity built into it and that is special in and of itself!! You should be Proud of this piece!!!

I see that hole as an invitation to rain. Luckily I think I will mostly be wearing my bag and horn under a match coat or frock coat in poor weather.

Whip-stitch the holes from the inside (so the thread does not come all the way through) and rub a little grease into the repair. Shouldn't be a problem.
