My oldest brother was in the ranching/cowboy world for quit a few years, and he recently got permission to turkey hunt on a friend's ranch in eastern Wyoming.
He is just starting in the hobby and wanted to try a turkey with the flintlock, so he invited me out for a traditional camp/hunt, I said, "let me think about it..ok"
I love turkey hunting.
So this past weekend I traveled out and we set up camp on the ranch and hunted for the next three and a half days.
(Please forgive me for catching the horseless carriage on the one photo, was not paying enough attention)
That country has a lot of dips, draws, and hollers, as we hillbillies in Missouri would say, so we would get on a high point to look for turkeys, it got pretty chilly in the mornings and sometimes we would make a fire and coffee to warm up.
The turkeys roosted across the fence on the neighboring ranch, so we would either have to try to call them across, or just wait for some to split off and come over, which occasionally they did, we came close several times, once we had a flash in the pan, and another time we called in 3 gobblers but got caught in a bad position and they spooked before we could get a shot off.
On the morning of the third day we spotted a lone gobbler heading up a draw so we hoofed it around him and set up for an ambush, after setting up I gave a few calls and he would gobble, but was very cautious, he ended up coming down a wash out of sight then popped out about 30 yards on my side and was angling away so it was now or never and I let him have it, the shot rocked him back on his heels (I know, too far away) but he started back up the wash but stalled just long enough for Cliff to finish him with a shot from his fowler! so it took both of us, but we got him.
He had 1" spurs, and a 9" beard, a pretty good Merriams, we had a great time.
