Got lucky this morning, was set up behind the house where I've killed the last several of my flintlock deer. The weather had warmed up a bit from the past several days and there was no deer movement until around 7:30, I looked to my left and saw this eight point coming my way, lucky for me he was up wind and ambled in to 30 yards and was kind enough to turn broad side. My shot was a bit high but as I was in a tree there was enough angle to get a lung, after loosing the trail and then finding it again several times I managed to track him down in all the brush. Though he is not a real large buck, he is the biggest I've been able to get with a flintlock to date. url=https://ibb.co/VxQVWHh] [/url]

Thank you gentlemen! Sicilianhunter, I will probably just mount the antlers with some plaster of paris and attach to a board, I already have several mounts and a bunch of antlers that my Dad harvested before he passed away, one soon runs out of room!

LenapeJ, That's a good plan, I'm a fan of the European mount myself but I was thinking along the lines of knife and accouterment handles, possibly powder measures. Lately, since moving to TX, chert (flint to us here in the states) is EVERYWHERE and I've getting tools together to start some knapping projects. That's the long way of mentioning that antlers also make good billets for knapping flint!! LOL

I do the full skull European. Skulls are simmered with plenty of Biz laundry additive - meat and gristle slides right off the bone. A little scraping with a butter knife and scrub with a plastic bristle brush does the rest.

The top of the skull Euro mount is my favorite as well. The full hair on neck and head takes up too much room, is too much to maintain over time, and just lacks the class of simple bone and antler.

I have done a number of the Europeans as well, the only thing extra that I did in addition to what you said, is after the initial boil/removal of flesh is that I boil in 50/50 water proxide solution, makes the skull a really nice white.

This was my "failed shot" a few weeks ago on a very nice doe... Glad I didn't wound her though in the attempt. About a 25 yard shot down into a creek bed with a new oasge bow I made myself. Shot low, right under her belly and to my amazement she almost jumped straight up out of the creek bed and took off like a rocket. Arrow hit a nice stone and, well was the weaker link...

Wow that's some force to bend that broad head like that, I used to hunt with a recurve, but now the flintlock is my hunting passion, good luck to you out there.

but now the flintlock is my hunting passion Amen to that my brother. An amazing piece of equipment they are. Something to be said about utilizing one, a very humbling experience in all regards.
