This may have been discussed before though I couldn’t find any threads about it.
I’ve had some difficulty finding any pictures or detail descriptions of what 18th century ladles (for casting balls) May have looked like if a market Hunter, etc. was carrying it in his shooting bag.
The encyclopedia of the American revolution seem to have a picture of one but the description didn’t match.
Couldn’t find a description in Dodderidge.
It seems most people use the ubiquitous small ladle with a shaft for using a stick. alternatively I’ve seen people with the small folding ladle. Cannot find documentation for either.
Any leads, ideas or pictures to share?

Personally I have never unearthed any documentation of individual woodsman carrying ladles within their kit... Seems counter intuitive because you'd reckon the boys would have had to run ball in certain circumstances away from the homestead. I created the ladle below because I'm operating on good instinct and when you need to run ball it's obviously an essential piece of kit. That said copper was commonly available during the period and much more pheasible than a dedicated folding ladle. Copper also is an excellent conductor of heat and perfect for casting over the fire. I see this being a piece constructed out of necessity. So simple to construct but also a necessity that I'm willing to take a shot from good judgment on deciding to carry one without definitive proof. Worth noting I've melted allot of lead over the fire with this ladle. One of those simple projects that continues to amaze me at its simplicity and efficiency.

In my copy of the Encyclopedia copyright 1975, published 1989 (?), on page 189, items 3,4 and 5 show an assortment of lead melting ladles. If you don't have that, I can copy and post it.

Thanks Spence, I've seen those. There are some vendors out there that sell replicas of those.
I'm looking for historical evidence of the smaller, portable ones, either with the folding handle or the opening for inserting a stick.
