As some of you were aware, for the last 2 years I worked in a city about 170 miles from where I live. I finally returned to my hometown for work at the end of January. Today, as I was walking across campus in the rain, I became aware of a strong odor of evergreens - it was delightful. Where I was tended to be quite windy and there were very few trees; the only respite I had was when I drove home for the weekend every 2 weeks and I could feel my mood lighten as I approached the pass covered with trees.
It is curious how something so minor could have such a profound effect...

Nothing, "so minor," about it. A place without enough trees (that should have them,,, desert and such is different) is just not right. For those of us tuned in to the real natural world, unnatural paved and concrete environments are unsettling on many levels.
Glad you are home, enjoy.

Hand, I get it. Living in NM, I used to joke with people saying, "Yeah, where I come from we have little things like water and trees..." That place was like Tatooine!! Now I'm in TX and it's paradise in comparison!!! ENJOY!!!

When I owned & managed a security company in the city some years ago, I found that being away from my forest home was very stressful. One day I took the day off leaving my eldest son in charge & visited our forest. I was so overwhelmed that I just lay down on the wet grass on the header stream flats. After that I was able to go back to work. But I am retired now & at home permanently, I think my mental health would have deteriorated had I remained in the city for too long. Keith.

I can't handle a city, not at all and I'll personally avoid one at all costs. Having a connection with nature is vastly important. From mental and spiritual well being, without it I'd be one unhappy person.
