Thread buttons are easy to make, and a shirt doesn't need many. The shirts with those buttons can be laundered and they are much softer than metal or bone ones.
The other day I was reading something about French troops in Canada using leather buttons on military leggings. I've never run across another source saying the same thing, and wondered if that was true or not.

I've never run across another source saying the same thing, and wondered if that was true or not. I've made and used veg-tan leather buttons, but impregnated with beeswax. They are hard/stiff with no "bendability" and the wax darkens the leather to a very dark brown.
