Not sure which subforum this belongs in but I'll place it here for now. I know Tandy can be a "go to" place for leather crafting stuff due to their name recognition. They are somewhat limited in selection in certain departments though. One thing I've found elsewhere that they don't have are strips/straps of leather thin enough and long enough to be used as a single piece strap for a shot pouch or shooting bag. Enter, Zack White's, www.zackwhite.com/vegetable-tanned-leather-strips-xl-lengthI've used this for my last couple bags and once the stiffness is broken out of them and some mink oil is worked into the rough side (after dye is applied to the smooth side) they are great.

Excellent! I might move this to the Library. I'd suggest adding a post to the Useful links & information thread.

Dave, here is a wonderful group of people to do business with. furandhide.comI can compile a listing for leather resources I've used and affix it into the library so others could add as well. While I normally tan my own on occasions I do buy when I'm unable to access anything other than green deer hides. Give these folks a call, they have many treasures they can dig up if your looking for something special.

Thanks gentlemen. Only fur I've bought is a beaver fur I bought from Mike Yancey at Pine Hollow Longbows. I am looking to get some brain tan for moccasins, money will be the biggest issue there. I will check the sights you've provided for the best prices.

Honestly, save the brain tan for less wear items unless you can find brain tan moose due to the cost involved. I've come to use split moose which is the closest thing you can get without actually brain tanning and is extremely durable. Mocs just wear to fast when worn in the forest, at least for me they do as I wear them whenever I'm in the woods.
Yet what are you looking for? I can tan you a hide if you'd like.

Braintan will wear pretty quickly and you will be patching often. If you must use braintan, add a second sole of something more substantial that is easily and inexpensively replaced. I prefer commercial-tan bison for soles - soft yet tough.

Thanks for the advice. A 5 foot square piece of moose hide from braintan.com is $150 and is what I was considering. If I can find something less expensive that lasts longer I will gladly use it.
