As the title states, my boys first firelock. For some time I've been looking forward to the day, which also gives me an excuse to build another firelock... Win, win.
I've had my eye on the Chambers little fella kit, which I've handled in person. Another fella from our club built one for his boy and it's a phenomenal rifle all around. However backlogs are LONG and not knowing what the shape of the economy will be months down the road I've been sensing a need to aquire parts quickly. The idea of a blank build was were I ultimately settled. A scaled down A-typical late Lancaster or Bedford county rifle is what I had in mind in .45 or .50 with a B profile swamped barrel.
Fast forward, one rifle I've always wanted to build has been a Jeager... Yet, I don't want my boy to start with a larger caliber. I started searching for barrels and decided to give pectonica river a call. Low and behold everything I had wanted for this build they had in stock for what they call a transitional kit. 31" swamped rice barrel, .50 caliber, fine grade maple (would have preferred walnut). Overall length just shy of 46" and a trigger pull of 13" which I may adjust.
Needles to say for the price of parts I couldn't pass the option up. Plus this gives ole dad the opportunity to play with the rifle beforehand once built...😊
To be continued, parts should arrive within a few weeks and I'll begin building. I plan to fancy her up with some simple hollow relief carving and engravings. My skills at high and low relief are not were I'm comfortable tackling more orante work yet, getting there though.
Many avenues to go on this one but dad gets to build a rifle he's always wanted to tackle and he'll get a fine piece to grow into through the years!

What a great thing to do!
My best friend in life had a "boy's or woman's" sized flint rifle made in the early 80's when his son was 11. He used that for some time before he outgrew it. Since my friend's wife was never interested in shooting, he passed the rifle on to his son. That son has since had his own son and he used it until he outgrew it as well.

Something I've been waiting to do since he was born. Time has flown by and now here we are... I keep telling him to stop growing but he doesn't listen. Was hoping parts would have arrived today, but maybe tomorrow. He loves trains and pawpaw lives by our rural rail line so I've cut multiple brass disks to get pancaked. Plan to cut a few inlays with what I can salvage and clean up.
