Very interesting, Dave, thanks for posting. I knew that Jefferson was interested in the mammoth and mastodon bones, and that he had instructed Lewis and Clark to look for other such bones on their Voyage of Discovery, but had never heard about the sloth claws. That's of particular interest to me because of the Greenbriar connection, since one of my direct ancestors spent time in the Greenbriar Valley before coming to the Kentucky frontier in 1779.

A lot of great information there.

I've always found fossils & archeology fascinating. So much to learn, though in Jefferson's time, a source of confusion and fuel for the imagination.
