So I'm wondering if any of you have ever had a similar problem.
I have a wooden cheese-box style canteen I needed to line so I used brewer's pitch (from Townsends)
Seemed to work fine for a long time but possibly because it dried out (even though I kept it filled) it started to leak.
When I went to re-apply brewer's pitch again (melting it all first, etc) and I poured into the canteen, the pitch just all sparked and crackled and would explode (dangerously) out of the canteen spout like a miniature volcano, spreading hot tar-like pitch everywhere (yes...even on me).
I assumed this was caused by moisture left in the interior so I let it dry out for a month and tried again....same result.
I need to get this lined before a trek in 2 weeks or come up with an alternative. Anyone have a similar experience? Any suggestions?

Put the canteen in a warm oven to re-melt the existing pitch? ? ?
Keep the canteen inverted so the molten pitch can drain out?

All I did with my wood water bottles was soak them in the water butt before use. Once the wood swelled, there were no leaks. Keith.

Traditionally beer casks were steamed inside and then hot pitch was added and bunged up then rolled around .quickly then un-bunged and poured out. The whole process took maybe 30 seconds, a minute tops.

Suggests boiling water might be used to remove the existing pitch.

I'm waiting until I have time to re-heat some pitch again (and dress head to toe in protective clothing so I don't burn myself like last time as in the original post) and try to re apply to a pre-heated canteen.
Have barely been home for several continuous weeks.
I'll let you guys know...
