Within my market wallet you always will find whole wheat flour and cornmeal. These two simple grains serve a variety of cooking options and are very versatile. One of my favorite meal options to go along with a simple stew is to bake a few ash cakes that are directly cooked upon the hot ashes of the fire. All that one needs is enough water to hydrate the flour or meal to form a dough, place on the ashes and watch until the cake turns golden/ brown or to your liking and flip. Once cooked simply blow the ashes off and enjoy the wonderful smoky flavor baked in with your favorite camp dish.
