I believe this has been discussed before elsewhere but I don't remember how it went. Probably degenerated and I blocked it out. I also notice we don't have a "muzzleloader shooting," section.
Anyway. Is it safe to mix 2 different brands of powder,, both 2f,, in my horn? A friend gave me an old partial can of Meteor brand 2f, I normally use Goex. With Goex being a rare commodity for the time being, and the Meteor being of unknown to me quality, I'm wondering if it is safe to mix some in to top of my horn that already has Goex in it. I'll only be squirrel hunting with it so I am not concerned about reduced ballistic performance, just whether or not this could be a safety issue.

I can't think of a reason why that would be a problem at all.

You'll be completely fine.

For what it's worth, I've mixed Goex and Schuetzen powders with no problem.

You'll be completely fine. You know me better than that. I'll never be "completely fine."

I'd probably do an open burn rate comparison of the two powders first. Then proceed with your best judgement. A pressure test would be better, but I doubt you have the equipment for that.

Nope, definitely don't have equipment for a pressure test. I would love to get my hands on one of those 18th century powder testers someday though.
I already mixed some Meteor in with the Goex. Probably barely 1/4 of what is the horn,,, more likely less than that. If the squirrels cooperate we will see how it burns today.

Oh they cared. They must have cared a lot.
Saw nothing. No squirrels, red or grey, almost nothing was moving. I saw 1 woodpecker and 1 hawk. The woods were still. The only thing moving was the breeze.
The critters must have known the devastation of the Meteor, lol.

Unless you're weighing charges down to a tenth of a grain and ramming with the exact same pressure every time, you'll never detect a difference between the two.
