I have to agree with Hawkeye on the lack of a button on the flap. My other bags used heavy enough leather that combined with the flat sewn flap (rather than folding over from the back) they didn't need a button. The above pouch used very light and supple goat leather and seemed to want the button,,, it is the one feature I don't like and I don't usually button it unless on rough terrain or sitting on the ground while wearing it.

Thanks for the pics Nock, that's a nice bag. I cut out my bag this morning, and was debating about a welt, and Hawk just convinced me...my bag will be about 7 1/4" square...wow that's small! Back to work...

I went in a different direction with this bag. I chose a pigskin bag, 7"x8", and I can shoot either/both shot or ball using tow wadding only. It has worked very well for me. Spence

Back to work... Definitely go with a welt, even more important of you aren't turning the bag, buy a good idea either way. My biggest debate is a gusset. Haven't done one yet. My 1st serious attempt at a shot pouch was with pig leather similar to what Spence used. I like the material a lot and might use it for my slightly larger bag with a gusset. I'm thinking that with a gusset that is even just 1 inch wide across the bottom and tapering narrower up the sides, I shouldn't have to make the height and width of the bag much bigger in order to gain quite a bit of volume.

Gussets are rather easy to incorporate and sew in. Just finished a simple D shaped bag from bison hide that has a gusset. Even a small bag with a gusset gives plenty of space for ones paw.
Good call on the welt LJ, very important piece to add in. Keep up posted on you're progress.
