That's a beautiful horn mate. How much powder would a smaller horn like this hold?

bushfire, I have an old original horn of about that size, 7 1/2" around the outside curve, butt 1 3/4". It holds 850 grains of FFFg.

Spence Dimensions are about right Spence, this ones a wee bit larger diameter wise, plus the base is hollowed out. For a small bore firelock she'll hold more powder than one would likely shoot in a day. I'll have to post some images of the original small horn I've got in my collection, she's a fine piece.

I tend to weigh my horns empty then filled and write the numbers down. Then I can just fill on the scale without having to keep holding the horn to the light and trying to see what's in there as I know how much it holds.
But, then I usually loose what I wrote it on.
On that note, just curious, what weighs more, wood or horn? Do these big booty horns weigh more than that same horn with a flat or shallow dome butt.

Ya I don't do any calculations on powder capacity. All I know is the majority of horns hold more powder than I'll ever shoot in a day. Plus I don't like missing my target! In terms of weight, horns are relatively light, certainly when properly turned and thinned the horn becomes much lighter. Case in point the above horn, base being hard maple even hollowed it still weighs a touch more than the horn itself. Depending on the size and style, obviously horn can weigh more or less than that of the plug being used. Large horn with a pine base, horn likely will weigh more.

I kind of meant a comparison of raw material like per square inch. Which weighs more, a 1"×1" piece of horn or a piece of maple or a piece of walnut all equal dimensions?
