Good morning,
I have always had an affinity for larger calibres, in both muzzleloaders and breechloaders I've enjoyed reading about their history and applications, especially as it relates to hunting. I had looked at a Chambers Kit a while back but I had to concede with honesty that at this time in my life with small children and chipping away at getting our house and block up to scratch it would take a very long time to do. So I'm happy to shelve that for when I'm older and life has a different pace.
But I still would like a nice larger bore rifle. I'm currently looking into the logistics of navigating import permits and waiting to hear back from a US exporter. If I can line those ducks up my next point would be deciding on what to get.
I want it because I want it, but practically I see it as my red deer and sambar deer go to rifle that can have good knock-down and penetration out to 100m and perhaps a bit beyond. Unless my life does a 180 on the hunting front I foresee it as my main hunting rifle perhaps for the rest of my life.
I want a nice handling rifle, I'm leaning toward a 62 cal but would consider a little bigger and perhaps as small as 58. I do wonder on the lower end if there is really enough of a step up from my 54 to justify it as I'm not planning on selling the 54. I foresee it being my small deer gun, and one for lending to friends/visitors/my kids.
In terms of style, I quite like what I understand are transitional guns with influences of the later American rifles and earlier Germanic styles. The aesthetics, balance of a swamped barrel and importantly shorter length are attractive to me.
Regarding length, something around a Max of roughly 52 - 54" total length would make things much easier for me with travel both locally and abroad.
Other factors I'm considering are wood, I really like nicely figured cherry. It obviously would need a good quality fast lock and I would like double set triggers.
So that brings me to the pointy end, if our exchange rate were dollar for dollar I'd just get a full custom build from scratch but they aren't so to keep it realistic, buying a kit and then finding someone to build it for me is probably the best option.
Jim Chambers Edward Marshall rifle is probably my favourite in terms of style and aesthetics that I've seen although I don't believe it goes higher than 58 cal. I did see on the Rice or Colerain website that they have a .62 barrel with the same profile so perhaps it's possible? Their Mark Silver is also lovely but at 60", too long for what I'm after.
Are there any other rifles kits that would suit what I'm after? I'm really open to any suggestions or feedback.
Thank you
