G'day all, I hope this thread finds you all well. I'm not trading or selling per se, but I just wanted to let you guys know that I received an email address for a french flint knapper from a gentleman on another forum. I received 34 x 3/4" and 34 x 7/8" flints in the mail yesterday. Obviously I have not shot them yet but they appear to be of the finest quality. Very even edges and no horrible humps. In Australia we have two suppliers of flints commercially, one charges around $10 per flint, the other around $18. These cost me less than $2.50 AUD and do not have crooked chipped edges or big humps. French flint is also very hard to come by, I'm sure my fusil de chasse will be much happier with an amber french flint between her jaws over the brutish black english she's been used to! If anyone is after some french flints, I'll dig up the email address and pass it on.

Definitely post the contact information, thank you.
A friend was in the Royal American Regiment at Fort Pitt, back in the 1960s. He had trouble with his Bess eating the black English flints, so he appropriated a French amber from the museum's collection, and his problem was solved. I will be needing some flints for my Harpers Ferry.

My limited personal experience has been that they aren't too dissimilar to english, I just prefer French things of the period because of my french heritage.
I'm Australian.
Flint knapper details are below.

Australia, I knew. Whereabouts? Just curious. I used to do a lot of bush ballads, and once sheared a sheep with the old, blade shears, just to try my hand.
Back in the 1700s French amber flints were definitely considered to be superior to English flints, even by the British Army.

I'm in SE Aus, in Victoria.
One of our good family friends is a blade shearer, in fact he missed my wedding because he was at the international blade shearing championships in Ireland!
I've since put a 3/4'' and 7/8" flint into my longrifle and fusil respectively, both are sparking really well.

Now, let's see how long those flints last.
I have a photo of myself with the blades, and the ewe I had just shorn. She was a variety that was black, so I captioned the pic " They tar the sheep 'til they're nearly black" ( a line from "The Limejuice Tub").
When my Wife asked the old fella who owned sheep and shears how long it had taken me, he smiled and said:"Too." A great memory.

Richard/Grumpa If the sheep was black but the wool white it'd be a black Suffolk. If it was a black wooled sheep it's lucky to have been allowed to live!
