Ok… I need help. I’m at a complete loss. Our pal paranger put me onto an original hammer poll ‘hawk head on eBay and I “accidentally” won it with an obscenely low bid. Remember the original horn I won? Same deal. Anyway… it arrived today and I started considering the possibility of putting it into service. It will clean up nicely. Upon looking at the eye, I became completely confused. It’s a circular eye. And significantly tapered. However… the small part of the eye is at the top. Backwards… er… upside down from what I expected. So… casting flaw? A tomahawk handling method I’m not aware of? How to go about hanging this little guy? Bottom of eye is 3/4” diameter. Top is 5/8”. Doesn’t sound like much, but it is. Eye is only 3/4” deep. While researching how to hang this all afternoon and evening, I’ve discovered that this is a pretty valuable little tomahawk. How to haft this darling…

Hmmm, going to need some thinking on this one. Initially my thought us that the only way will be to haft it like an axe or hatchet with a wedge in the top of the haft.
Any sign of old coarse threads inside the eye?

Cone the handle end and wedge in place. I suspect the cone shape prevents a weak spot where the handle enters the head by eliminating the step.

Makes sense, hand. I’m thinking of leaving this in relic condition and hafting it for display. I have ash, hickory, walnut and maple growing here at home. Guess it’s time to choose an appropriate stick and hang the darling.

Hickory would be my first choice. Maybe ash as the secondary choice.

Reached out to an historian of tomahawks. This is a reproduction. No guilt on cleaning it up. Let’s see what we can do. 🤓
