Thank you gentlemen. I'll post the references once I return to the shop. It still never ceases to amaze me the level of craftsmanship and ingenuity that the ole fellas put into their work. Makes me continue to be humble knowing I've got allot to learn!

You can use low temp plumbing solder to cast in rings to items such as these. I used it to make a bolster for a small artist's palette knife - made a collar with cardboard, melted the solder and poured it into the collar (preheat with a heat gun). Allow to cool, shape and finish.

I've never casted anything other than brass but the solder idea sounds like a neat method and much cheaper! Not sure I want to risk damaging this turned spout already... I'd have to take it back to the lathe and chase in a channel for the ring. I have a feeling this won't be the last, however I may just do it... Won't take but a few minutes.

Wow, that's neat.
I'm wondering about the diameter of the powder hole in the plug. Is it smaller than the ball diameter or larger enough so the balls don't get stuck in it?

Gus Thank you, the stopper diameter is indeed smaller so ye balls shall not get... stuck. The original I believe was made to service a musket in short order. I haven't any documentation showing it's use for a rifle so that is a cliff hanger unfortunately.
