My rendering of the "Zimmerman tomahawk." The Zimmerman site in lllinois dates to at least 1692, making this the oldest documented spike tomahawk found in North America to date (John Vargo). The head is approximately 7" long, with a 1 3/4" bit. It is hafted in hand split and scraped hickory. The eye features an unusual wedge arrangement using a 3/4" diameter piece of brass pipe and a hand forged nail, as found in the original. text adele someone like you

Very interesting. Do you see any advantage to the pipe amd nail or do you think it was just an expedient way to wedge the original at the time that particular axe was made?

Very neat piece. The wedge system there is unique. I'd very much say an expedited repair after the fact.
