The Friends of Washington’s Crossing is trying something new this year for the annual Crossing of the Delaware. They’ve hired a military historian, and they’ve mandated that those who are not members of a Revolutionary War reenacting regiment muster in with the Associator Company and attend at least one drill beforehand. Here are some pictures of the drill; I brought my son and another student along this year: photos.app.goo.gl/mKZHKNsm595CHL126photos.app.goo.gl/LoYbWDEofJabtbdY8The first crossing (they do it twice; the second is the 25th) is tomorrow. The weather is not going to be great, but we should still have a good time.

Good looking young men. And a proud papa. 👍
I seem to recall hearing/reading that the weather wasn't particularly excellent for that 1st most famous (infamous?) crossing....
We look forward to your AAR following the event.

We look forward to your AAR following the event. We’ll, the weather was miserable, periods of soaking rain just as we formed up to cross. Some soldiers nearly went swimming as they slipped on the gangplank boarding the boats, but we got across - well, the last boat got stuck and needed a tow off a sandbar, but most of us made it across fine. Here‘s a link to a few photos when the rain temporarily let up… photos.app.goo.gl/XifSZxVZn49wq4Xs6At least we were much warmer than it was on Christmas Day, 1776. I like authenticity, but I’d rather not get authentic frostbite or freeze to death, as two soldiers did on the march to Trenton.

Excellent. Thank you for your report back. I agree on maybe not dying a period correct death,,, yet. But I think part of all this, at least for me, is sometimes embracing some of what sucked at the time. How did your boys feel about it. I'd love to get their take on the experience. Ideally what they were thinking/how they felt at the time, now, and in several years looking back.

I’m with ‘Nock. I’d love to hear what the lads experienced. And… it would be great to have them here at the forum if this is something they want to learn more about. This is a pretty focused group and the communal knowledge can be tailored to very specific periods/impressions. Sign ‘em up!
