Very strange...and interesting. Reminds me of the M3 "grease gun" with a 90 degree bend in the barrel and mirrored sight for shooting around corners.

A good analogy. Shooting over the gunwale of a ship to repel borders while staying out of the line of fire yourself isn't all that different from shooting around corners. No sights, because they wouldn't be needed. I think that possibility is a reasonable one. A prototype which never made it mainstream, maybe.
