Good video, Keith. I found it interesting because the method you describe is the one I routinely use. I guess I was taught that when I was starting out. I use charcloth, wrap the cloth over the sharp edge of the flint in my left hand, and the strike with the steel cuts through the cloth and lights it. To start, I put a little tinder nest in my hand with the flint and cloth on top of it, so that I can then just drop the flint and the cloth is already in the nest for blowing into flame.
It wasn't until years later when I participated in a skills contest at my local BP club that I had to use the method of striking down with the flint, as you describe as your usual method. I frequently use that one now, especially when using charwood, and it is very quick and efficient.
Good find of that painting.
