Really nice job! Ah...the things we do for the women in our lives. I'm having to work on building extra cabinetry for the kitchen, while you get to do fun stuff!
Did you dovetail the corners, or lap and nail? I can't tell from the photos.

The corners are butt-joined with glue and nails. Still experimenting with dovetails, but haven't succeeded to my standards so I have not used them to join boxes...yet.

She is easy to please. After all, she is still sticking around.... You got a good one. Most of the women I've known in my life, maybe one exception, can find fault or reason for criticism in anything. Where did you find the paint? Or, as I'm suspecting, how did you make it?

Red Barn paint from Ace Hardware (I'm lazy and have no desire to make paint). I have milk paint, but I have so much more Barn paint. It is left-over from an oilcloth project years ago - bought a gallon can and am down to ~3/4 gallon after an oilcloth, 2 stools, a table and a couple other boxes...

Blackhand,
Overall that is a very nice chest and kudo's to you for making it for your Lady.
However and not trying to be too critical, I wonder where you got the documentation for those handles for the period? I am not an expert on 18th handles or pulls, but I have studied them to make 18th century tool boxes and other boxes and that's why I ask.

The handles are not period by any means (but similar enough to period handles not to stand out TOO much). They were a matter of convenience and economy that will be replaced at a later date.
As the old saying goes, "the cobbler's children haven't any shoes" and it was a situation that needed remedying...
I appreciate you bringing it up - anyone have a collection of 18th century trunk handle images they'd like to share?

Blackhand, Thanks for understanding I was not trying to nitpick you with my question on the handles. Some of the larger reproduction "Queen Anne" or "Chippendale" brass drawer pulls would be period correct and MAY be large enough for the chest, especially the three and a half inch to four inch sized "pulls." I realize you probably don't want to use rope pulls on "Milady's Chest" and want something a bit fancier. If something not quite that fancy is desired, there are a range of Iron pulls that are similar, but a bit more robust. Here is a range of Queen Anne Pulls, though you can find them in solid brass and less expensive from other sources: www.horton-brasses.com/queenannedrawer.aspChippendale Pull Styles: www.horton-brasses.com/large1.aspYou can find less expensive pulls by doing a google search on reproduction 18th century chest furniture. Actually by looking at the other furniture you used, it reminded me of furniture used on a period "secretary" chest. Most of them used brass instead of iron, but they otherwise match. Had a Secretary been damaged by fire and not otherwise repairable, they would have re-used the metal furniture. Gus

Thanks for understanding I was not trying to nitpick you with my question on the handles. It was a fair critique and something I had to consider with the limited time available - it was a birthday gift.

I put rope handles & leather hinges on a rendezvous chest I made many years ago. Keith.
