Keith, It had been in the back of my mind, but the picture you posted gave me the last nudge I needed to make a salt box. Thanks!

They are fun little projects easily made from random scraps of wood. I've had to book-match ripped boards to make the wider/taller back panel, but it's hidden under the paint.

Nice, well done. I like the less drastic shape of the second one's back panel.

Nicely done!
On the lids, did you carve dowel like projections on each side of the back and go into a hole drilled in each side, to use as the hinges?

Yes - easier (and more complicated) than hinges...

Nice, well done. I like the less drastic shape of the second one's back panel. The first is a prototype - my house is full of prototypes....the next-generation pieces have been given away or traded. I agree, the rounded profile is more pleasing to the eye.

Yes - easier (and more complicated) than hinges... Thank you.
Very common on sliding drawers of 18th century blanket chests and tool boxes as well.
