I came across our resident Keiths posting of a friends creation of a Knapsack that within reason could have been created at home by a individual of the period. Borrowed the idea, hope he doesn't mind Keith! My orginal was something similar in shape but worn and in need of being replaced, which it has been retired to the wall of display. My dimensions may be on the small side to some but for my modest load she is dandy. At approximately 16" wide and 18" in length I have plenty of room for my gear. Knapsack is made from linen and doubled for strength, all handsewn with linen thread and three pewter buttons to finish. I decided to coat the exterior flap with my oilcloth mixture and feel I added to much iron oxide for my liking, but undoubtedly have to live with the decision. I also decided to make two linen straps that are folded and sewn in multiple layers for strength. My previous knapsack straps simply were leather and they always irritated my shoulders. Found myself usually folding some cloth around the shoulder straps for more comfort, but now that problem is nonexistent. Overall very pleased with this new knapsack, took her out yesterday for a stroll and feel it's a fine addition to the kit. Images of the sewing process.

Very nice. How do you keep the spacing of your stitches so even? Is there some kind of spacing marker like the wheel I use for leather?

Hawk, WELL DONE I like what you did with the top flap. A first I thought it was paint. Do you use mineral spirits as a dryer in your oil cloth mixture?

I don't mind at all mate, well done, you made a good job of this. Apparently in our period it was very common for people to convert haversacks into knapsacks. I can't find the info I had on that so I will have to dig deeper! Keith.

Just all hand stitching, no markers, using my eye as a guide.
Also no additives, I've found additional chemicals weaken the fabric over time, experienced that first hand during a storm.
