With snow already on the ground in some places, can anyone identify the best choices for period snowshoes? I entertain the idea of a Primitive Biathlon event but I really just want to know what style of snowshoes could purchased that would the most authentic for our period. Suggestions?

Showshoes appear to be region-, culture- and/or tribe-specific. The design also varied according to terrain (open vs. timbered, flat vs. hilly), type of snow, size, shape, type/pattern/density of lacing and others not coming to mind right now.

I’m partial to modified bear paws and if I’m not mistaken the NE natives used original, smaller bear paws. Some types are named things like “Huron” but I can’t be sure that this is related to tribe or a region or both. I also know they are weight rated. Is that due to size or construction?

I believe size would be associated with weight.

One would think so but in the case of traditional bear paws they can only get so big before they become...something else
