I've built a couple of gun kits just so I could experience a small bit of what the old boys did, which I've always hugely admired, but I'm no builder. I'm very interested in the tools and methods of the period gunmakers, though, and I have pictures of one I thought some would like to see. It's a hand operated rotary ream/drill for coning the barrel side of the touchhole. It is especially designed to insert into the breech and access the inside end of the vent. I have no info on the tool, can only guess it is from the first half of the 19th century. Whenever it was in use, it would seem to be good evidence the old boys were thinking about getting the prime and the main charge close together. Does anyone have info on such a tool? Spence
