My parents were WW2 era city folk who played tons of card games and even made up their own when they got bored with the ones they knew. I grew up in the suburbs and that was too tame for me but was the “county “ to them. Being too wound up to sit still I couldn’t stand card games!! Now, still a little too wound up to sit still but taking an interest in 18th Century tavern life, I have begun to take an interest in card and dice games of the period. I started to read the rules of Hazard and it just gave me a headache!! From what I have read so far, card games like poker are too late to be period. So, I ask you all, if there are any SIMPLE period card and/or dice games you know of. If possible please explain the betting on these games as well!! HEY!! BlackHand!! What the Hell is the name of this tavern anyway!?

Whist is probably the simplest and most common followed by faro.

Crown & Anchor was popular with British sailors. It is generally considered to have originated early in the 18th C. Less complicated than Hazard.

Coot, I did see this game and I saw that it was popular with the Royal Navy. It required special dice, which I don’t mind making if I can find blank die. It also needed a felt or “board”. I was thinking along the lines of just a straight up card/dice game.

Whist is simple, just cards. Faro even simpler, but you need all the stuff.
Yeah. Handle is an acronym. Think... Billy Idol.

Crown & Anchor was played with dice and a board (or cloth) marked with six symbols (of which the crown & anchor are two) - but it can just as easily be played with regular dice and the board or cloth marked one thru six - just not as unique or period looking.

Coot, You could assign a number value of the die to the symbols on the felt as well

Hand, Well the “Prancing Pony”, “Green Dragon “ and the “Slaughtered Lamb” are already taken so my vote is for the “Black dog” Tavern!!
