I have a shot pouch which I thought some might like to see, it’s a bit unusual. It’s apparently made of moose hide, and there are some quite different construction techniques. I don’t know who made it. A friend commissioned a rifle from Wm. Buchele in the 1970s, and this pouch came along with it. My friend bought the gun only as a collector’s item, had no interest in the pouch, so he gave it to me. I’ve almost never used it, but am carrying it more lately. I’ve been told Bill Buchele had someone who made bags for him. Buchele went about his craft in such an offbeat way I’ve often wondered if that were true, because this seems just like the kind of pouch he would think up. Something I’ve never seen before, the entire inside is painted with glue, apparently hide glue, I guess to stiffen it. A piece of leather is glued inside, on the back panel, as a reinforcement to the strap being sewn on. The strap is both sewn and glued. The pouch has a gusset, and welts at those seams. Inside, a piece of stiff vegetable tanned leather cut to exactly that shape is inserted in the bottom. The strap is made of one piece folded and glued. It’s adjustable by changing the lacing at the shoulder. The knife sheath is for a larger knife, and is done in an unusual way. It’s not sewn onto the front of the strap, but around it, with the strap inside. There is a hard rawhide insert, custom fit to the blade, which is inserted between the front of the strap and the sheath. Spence

Spence,
I competed at the Spring Nationals at Friendship the first time at the Spring Nationals of 1974, Fall of 1976 and both Spring and Fall Nationals of 1977 then on till the last time at the Spring shoot at 1980. That pouch reminds me of type that could have been worn there then, but I never saw anything exactly like that on the Primitive Range during those years.
Have to say some real thought went into that pouch and it is has some interesting things done to it to what probably was felt was the shortcomings of making a pouch from deerskin.
Interesting. Thanks for showing it.

Ya, that is different. I like the overall look of the bag, could live without the sheath. Would not be too thrilled with all the glue if I had ordered that and didn't know in advance. I wonder if originally a fabric liner had been glued in place, then for some reason removed.
So why are you "carrying it more," lately?

So why are you "carrying it more," lately? No real reason, just an old man's fancy. In 2012 I killed a deer with my .40 caliber flintlock. I decided to try that because I had owned the gun for 39 years and never hunted deer with it. Sort of the same thing with this bag, I've owned it for even longer and it has mostly been decorating my wall. I'm just using it a little now to see how it works, with a bit of nostalgia around the edges. It was given to me by a very good friend, an old dove hunting buddy and partner for 30 years who's now on his last leg. Carrying it occasionally reminds me of those good times. Such days are pretty scarce now. Spence

Best reasoning I've ever heard.
