Thanks for the votes of confidence. I have no doubt that I can solder the lug to the barrel successfully. It is the getting it positioned correctly part that I have serious doubts about. It just needs to be close and then you redrill the hole as needed. Or as Keith suggested, solder on a new lug then drill the hole using the holes in the forestock to mark the location.

I am hoping there is enough of the old solder left, in such a way as that the lug will "grab" into the right spot. When everyone says it needs to be very clean I am assuming you all mean chemically, completely grease and oil free.
If we put the octagon part of the barrel in our vice with the lugs up. Let's call them at 12:00. I have visions if my lug repair coming out at 11:57 or 12:03/5, lol.

You would be better served to remove all the old solder, clean to bare metal, tin lug & barrel with the paste solder and heat to join. That's my recommendation and its worth every cent you paid for it.... A wipe with acetone or alcohol before tinning is a good idea but don't get too compulsive about getting everything spotlessly clean. Think government work - good enough is enough.

The problem is worse than I thought. Apparently it is contagious. I have noticed for a while that when I use the hot water cleaning method on my Early Virginia smoothrifle, that the muzzle of the barrel separates slightly from the nosecap.
So, suspecting another broken off front lug, I pulled the barrel today as I already had the lock off, was cleaning the gun, and knew I won't be getting any shooting time for at least a week.
Both the front and middle lugs had come loose. They conveniently left nice clean rectangular outlines of solder that were actually perfect enough to hold the lugs fairly securely and ensure they will land in the correct places.....
Ugh. Dovetails would he so much better.....

So, seeing as placement seemed a cinch. I decided to risk it and try to do it myself with the solder paste. I tried Eric Krewson's C-clamp technique on the middle lug. I had a hard time working around the clamp and getting the heat where it needed to be evenly, and eventually bumped the clamp off. The lug stayed put. I also couldn't really see what I was doing all that well and never really saw any solder "run" as they say. On the front lug I used the suggestion from Rich Pierce to wire the lug in place. This worked very well.
Long story short, both lugs are in place, staying put with some taps from the small brass hammer with nylon face that I use for sight drifting and parts "coaxing" on modern guns. The pins lined up fine. The real test will be when I finally get to do some shooting again. If it holds, I will do the FdC.

Nock, Happy to hear that all worked out so well for you!! In all the madness that I came home to after my last event (hopefully not my LAST event...ever) I forgot to mention that the solder paste worked like a charm for installing the new front sight on my FdC. Good job getting your lug in place and sharing the experience!!
