Audubon and His Journals Vol. II, early 19th century, returning from a coon hunt:
"On arriving there, we find a cheerful fire. Toby stays without, prepares the game, stretches the skins on a frame of cane, and washes the bodies. The table is already set ; the cake and the potatoes are all well done ; four bowls of buttermilk are ranged in order, and now the hunters fall to."
I imagine those cakes were hoe cakes/pones. I can assert from personal experience that they go very well with buttermilk.

Mrs Coot & I have eaten hoe cakes / ash cakes many times - only ingredients - cornmeal, a little salt & enough water to make a burger size patty. It was amazing how full you feel after eating a couple of these.

Makes a great dessert. I make a thick hot water cornmeal batter with meal, salt, hot water and sometimes add a little sugar and sliced/small diced apple. Fry until golden, sprinkle with sugar and enjoy!
