With turkey season coming up soon I was thinking about turkey calls. Way back when, I made one from the wing bones of one of the first wild turkeys I took. There are three bones in the wing of a turkey, and a lot of people use all three in making a call. I only used the two smaller ones, and it seems to work very well. I just boiled the raw bones for a few minutes, scraped all the tissue from the outside, cut the ends off, pushed the marrow from the center with a wire and let them dry well. A little trimming and sanding made them fit together snuggly, and I then used some melted beeswax to "glue" them together. To strengthen the joint I wrapped it well with wet sinew and let it dry. It has held for 20+ years. It's not an easy call to use, for me, but I keep at it. I've never called in a tom using just that call, but have used it in conjunction with other types of calls to successfully put a bird in the pot. Spence

Very nice! I've made and used a few - they tend to tickle my lips in a way that doesn't work well for me.
I have at least a half-dozen sets of boiled bones to make more at some point.

Yep - I'm usually scratching my lip after the first yelp...

I broke the only one I've had. Making another is one of those projects that keeps getting put off. If I could do more than help on it, it would be a higher priority. I could probably practice enough to get a cluck put of it, but it would be tough. I rely more on soft purrs and clucks to bring birds in close than I do yelps. Never figured out how to purr with the wing one call.
I'd still like another just for tradition's sake.

I have one I've made that is identical. Great call they are, kids love it as well!

The next calls I make will use cutler's resin to join the bones. This resin has superior flexibility to pitch, though this might also depend upon how the pitch is processed.

I made it from an old recipe I found. Mixture of beeswax, pitch and very fine charcoal. I'll check my resources at home for the proportions, if I can find the sticky note it was written on..
