The only time I remember seeing a somewhat realistic depiction of these conditions was a reenactor I saw at Mansker's Station, Goodletsville, Tn. many years ago. A fellow was dressed much as the descriptions above, in several layers of dirty, mismatched, ragged clothes, long scraggly hair and a lot of fake dirt, representing the village rat catcher, complete with a rat in a trap. He collected a crowd. Spence Bill Smith, he always draws near a crowd! Fine fella indeed. I see him at a number of events. I believe the rat was named "Wilson".
