I found this after Spence posted a link to a fantastic video of Maggie telling "her story" in another thread. I feel this deserves its own. She really gives us a lot of great info on creating a historical persona. I just wish for more info on how and where she accessed some of the court, and other, records she used.
Maybe we should have a "persona" section. An area where those with a persona, or that are developing one can share it. And where we can learn how to go about creating one and developing it into a believable "real" person.

I second this suggestion, good idea. Keith.

I second this suggestion, good idea. Keith. I agree also!! For those who do Facebook, Mad Anne Bailey has a “fireside chat” program that discusses this topic in depth as well as others up to and including “how to plan a trek”

I must be missing something, I don’t see any posts pertaining to persona building. Just something about posting photos and a bit about juice jaws’ avatar

Look in the Mentoring section at the bottom of the main page. There is now a subforum for personnas...
The other items you describe are stickies at the top of every subforum.

I guess I agree to a point: using your own personality and experience certainly provides a useful basis for a historical persona - if portraying a particular persona is even a useful artifice for you, depending upon your goals. The author starts to lose me, though, when asserting that the specific details of time, place, etc are unimportant, and anyone questioning the appropriateness of your specific choices can "get stuffed." To me, the research, thought, and experiential learning (experimental archeology?) that go into the selection of those very specific details of material culture are a large part of the joy of this hobby (lifestyle?).

PARanger, I must say that the article has its flaws and I found the “get stuffed” portion inappropriate as well but I think it gives new people something to go on...to a point, as you say. For someone just entering the lifestyle (the word “hobby” implies building model airplanes or raising ships in a bottle to me...) all of the details involved can be daunting. They need to start somewhere and from my perspective it starts with an item, a weapon or an article of clothing and builds out from there. Many mistakes are made along the way as we learn how to learn. I may be wrong but I believe that is the spirit of the lifestyle you embrace

Not sure that I fully agree with him either. But still an article worth reading. He asks the right questions. His premise is good, but, much of who and what we are today doesn't translate to a person back then, that is why we struggle with so many questions, and why we are constantly fighting the "logic" that, "if they had the material and skill in 17xx someone must have figured out to make a ______ (fill in blank)" on other forums. Our logic is not theirs. Their logic, and current (to them) knowledge is not ours. I can't name all my state reps. either, but, I bet a lot of people could name most of the similar important people of their area. They weren't filling their heads with sports stats, celebrity silliness, specs on cars or motorcycles,,,, I think you get my point. Now, I don't have a full persona yet, working on it. Some might say that for those of us who go about this alone, one isn't needed. Maybe not. But, there are good reasons to have the basic outline of one, even if not a full blown character. I'll give my thoughts on those reasons in the new section below.

Think I may approach the persona differently than most may, or maybe not...
Rather than emulating a specific person I try to subject myself and who I am personally as someone living during the period. As in just being myself 100% and not sacrificing who I am as a person at the expense of a hobby. All to often at event's I hear people referring themselves to being this person, or that person... To me that just kills it. Why not just be yourself in an 18th century version living your life?
Now I know allot of individuals do as I'm describing but I've met far more Simon Kenton's, Daniel Boone's and famous native chiefs than just Joe Smo woodman's doing their woodman's thing.
Good topic for discussion as always!
