Just finished a book "The Big Bang" by G.I. Brown (1998) - no, it is not about the TV show but rather a history of explosives. Easy to read, the first 80-90 pages cover black powder. that was my main interest in getting the book but the rest - guncotton, smokeless, TNT, etc., while past our time frame here, was still an interesting overview. The BP chapters were a good cover of invention, refinements, manufacture & usage.

Another one I found to be very good is Gunpowder: Alchemy, Bombards, And Pyrotechnics: The History Of The Explosive That Changed The World, Jack Kelly, 2004.

I just posted the question on the Muzzleloading Forum but am perhaps more likely to get an answer here - has anyone read "A Chronology of Black Powder" by Richard D. Frantz - a very scarce book, not found by any of the better search engines but supposedly an excellent source on the subject. Anyone familiar with it?
