One of the reasons I have been slow to adopt a period water carrying method is mold and cleanliness. I once had a leather wine bota bag go moldy on me. Now that I have my gourd water bottle/canteen, what is the best way to dry it completely after use and prevent mold and other nasties? With the beeswax lining, is hanging it upside down in the sun too much heat? What about adding some rice at some point in the drying process? Will grain alcohol hurt the wax?

Some may have other methods but... I just hang my bottle upside down to completely dry. Also my current vessel is not lined, no issues to date.
If at home maybe dry under a fan if there is concern.

Leave the cork out and set the canteen on the shelf or hanging by the strap. Alcohol won't affect the wax. If my gourd or leather canteen needs cleaning, I use a little warm water with baking soda - allow to soak for a while and rinse with water.

Thanks. I often disinfect my modern stainless steel water bottles with Grave's grain alcohol and boiling water. Can't use the boiling water in this case.

Baking soda is cheaper - save the grain alcohol for making homemade liqueurs such as Limoncello (or other citrus), Espresso or Cinnamon.

All I have ever done is tip the water bottles upside down & let them dry, never had any problems. I do only ever use rainwater though. Keith.

After nearly 15 years, that is when the canteens were cleaned with Baking soda and water. In other cases, they are drained and allowed to dry, first upside-down then left with the cork out top end up.
