Thanks go out to Nathan Kobuck for the research and inspiration for this one. From the papers of Baynton, Wharton, and Morgan at Fort Pitt: Fort pitt July 6th 1765 Delawares… 12 blk handled knives @6 Nathan surmised that since there were other known African hardwoods (e.g., camwood or barwood) being used for trade knife handles, ebony made sense for the "blk handled" knife mentioned above. He commissioned Ken Gahaghan to make his. My version is pictured below in a medium (6") blade, half-width tang (appropriate for 1765), and diamond profile 3 pin ebony handle.

Very, very, nice. So clean and neat looking. It looks like it is begging to cut something.

ParaRanger,
I've always shied away from diamond grips on knives, because they look like they may be difficult to index the cutting/slicing motion to the hand. Do you notice anything like that with this knife?

Gus Actually, I find them to be quite comfortable. The thumb falls naturally on the 45 degree shelf and the second index finger joint wraps around the opposite apex to oppose the thumb perfectly. It doesn't seem to fill the hand quite as fully as the octagonal profile, but maybe that is some weird result of how I make them.

Gus I thought the same until I made diamond-handled knives for 2 friends. There were no difficulties with indexing and the handles were quite comfortable.
