Every time I check the Forum looking for some BP conversation as an antidote to the &*$#&^% lockdown and find it has been 2-3 days since anyone posted anything, I am reminded of a scene in the old movie Inherit the Wind with Spencer Tracy. It's about the Scopes monkey trial of 1925, and Tracy plays lawyer for the defendant Henry Drummond. During a break in the court proceedings a radio announcer brings out a huge early microphone, and Drummond asks about it, is told it's radio. Drummond: Radio! God, this is going to break down a lot of walls. Announcer: You're not supposed to say "God" on the radio! Drummond: Why the hell not? Announcer: You're not supposed to say "Hell", either. Drummond: This is going to be a barren source of amusement! Spence

Spence, It's been an odd time for many, myself included. I'm dealing with people each day that have no regard for the safety of others and it just frustrates me. This ends up with me needing to recharge each day and less than optimal company. Guilty as charged... Albert

Yeah, I know how it is for anyone dealing directly with people re the virus. Concern for the community at large isn't even in the awareness of for an astonishingly high percentage of them. We've come to a sad state in this country. As an old hero of mine once said, "We have met the enemy, and he is us."
In the big picture my little frustration doesn't register. I can handle it.
Stay safe, everyone, both physically and mentally.

I understand what you're saying Spence. I come here for some relief from the frustrations of modern living, the Covid world, and all the controversy going on. As well as for the wealth of information our members provide. I am often disappointed when nothing new has been posted. But, I try to ease that feeling by thinking that our members are living life, experimenting with, and experiencing, the things we discuss, rather than just typing and reading about it all on a computer.
I stay active at the MLF, just because it is more active and thus provides some distraction. However, I find myself increasingly disgusted by,or exasperated with, sometimes even bored with, and just plain annoyed by much of the nonsense I find there. Better the quality here over quantity. It is also much faster/easier posting pictures there, so I will test post there sometimes.
What can we do to activate things here? All read the same book and post questions or things we've learned?

I thought I was the only one needing the escape to earlier times. Even my wife has told me she know goes back to hand-sewing her petticoats or apron or what not just to feel some disconnect from the current madness.
Maybe its different for you fellas but its even more difficult when you don't have "like minded" folks to discuss history, reenactment, trekking, etc with.
I wish I had more to contribute than questions to others but I sure appreciate all the learning and sharing going on here.

The only one I have even remotely nearby that shares this interest, that I know, is our fellow member John Half, and he is on the opposite side of the state, and, we both have weird work schedules. I too often wish I had more to contribute, or at least higher quality questions.

So? What shall we argue about? Short starter use by civilian hunters and militia members prior to 1800? The term, "possibles bag?"
Maybe we need to touch "the third rail," of the 18th century that never gets discussed, and is basically disallowed on these forums. Faith in 18th century life.

How about knives from files? A friend of mine will be sending an article that suggests they were more common than many would believe.

How about, scarves/bandanas worn about the head.
Black Hand, where will this article be found?
Armando, my understanding is that, other than the Quaker community, beards were only common on those men (and Italian grandmothers) that frequently would wear a caped pullover hunting shirt.
Joking of course.
My G. Grandmother Mandolfo would, NEVER, have worn a caped pullover hunting shirt.

My G. Grandmother Mandolfo would, NEVER, have worn a caped pullover hunting shirt. My Sicilian aunt had the the most impressive set of mutton-chop sideburns...

Grandmother Mandolfo didn't have the stereotypical Sicilian grandma facial hair. But there were others in the family of her generation and my grandmother's who did. Just not family names I want to put out on the internet.

I've been lessening my presence in the online world. Fortunately for me this mess has afforded more time spent in the forest practicing what I love most, and that's the hobby. Keeping my distance from the masses isn't anything new but the time off is greatly appreciated and highly coveted. So naturally when I have it, you'll find me nestled in the woods without a care to be had away from tech. The more and more this covid junk plunges society into a sprial the more I want to unplug from all things modern world.
