Anyone been watching the series "Barkskins" on National Geographic Channel? I bought the whole season and just watched the first episode last night.
It is set in New France in the late 17th century, and one of the principal characters is an agent of the HBC. Pretty interesting so far. I would be curious of others' impressions.

I watched it. Despite most of the native clothing being terrible, I found it entertaining. It does get a little sosp-operaish in parts...

Yeah, no surprise that the native material culture should be awry. I don't know who the technical advisors are in this case. Sadly, I think sometimes the worst historical advice comes from consulting the tribal "authorities" regarding their own history.

"Silk - another 40 yards..." Mark Baker seems to advised against this, but yet, it is in the movie. Sounds superficially plausible, but not so much in practice.
There are a couple native outfits that are much better than most in the program.

I watched each episode more than once, trying so hard to follow what was going on, as I admittedly don't know very much about the French Settlers in the period. Maybe if I had read the book, if there is one, it would make more sense?
Is there any period example of nailing the bodies of dead Iroquois Enemies to a tree? Is there a period example of arming their allies with pistols, instead of long guns?
I'm disposed to liking historic fiction, but this one is stretching my limits a bit.

PARanger, I’m about 3 episodes in and although it’s not riveting, it is entertaining. When it comes to anything coming out of Hollywood we have to allow for a fair dose of artistic license, meaning inaccurate depiction. Has anyone identified the long arms seen so far?

I just finished episode 4. I must admit to enjoying it, but it is starting to remind me of the Sopranos set in 17th c. New France...

I was thinking something spy-ish set in that period. I finished the first season while I made a new knife sheath and belt pouch. I may have to watch most of it again as my focus was spotty because I was crafting at the same time

The more I focus on details, the worse the material culture depiction gets. I have been watching on a small screen, so I guess it took me a while to pick up on some of the details.
As always, the shame of it is that given the lavish, extensive sets, etc., it wouldn't have been any more expensive or difficult to get the details RIGHT. BH was right about the Natives. The Wyandots look like extras from the original series Star Trek.

The pistols are India made English doglocks like those sold by Vetetan Arms. The one HBC longarm I saw closely was as well.

PARanger, I made a horrible mistake of buying an India musket from him when I first got back into the lifestyle because of the price point. You don’t know what you don’t know... A friend of mine gave it a HIGE facelift and now it’s pretty decent
