Anyone shoot a gun with a sliding wooden patch box lid? On a deer hunt many years ago I lost the sliding wooden patch box lid to my relatively new flintlock smoothbore. I didn't notice it until I started putting the gun in its case at the car at the end of the day. I was totally bummed. The wood of the gun is highly figured, and the builder had done an excellent job of matching the lid to the stock, and then I had refinished the gun. I felt certain there was no way a new lid could ever match as well. Happy to say the next afternoon at the end of the hunt I retraced my steps and found it. I had stood the gun leaning against a tree, and I guess something on the ground happened to hit the release. After that fright I determined that was the only time I'd have that happen. I designed and installed Spence's Double-Warranted Lid Lanyard, and that was the end of that. So far. I used s short piece of flax string, trapped one end under the box lid spring and tied the other to a small brass round-head nail I put into the box. It folds into the box as the lid is slid in place, takes up no room, doesn't interfere with the gear I store there, and has worked 100%. So far. For anyone who shoots a gun with a sliding wooden patch box lid, I recommend it. Spence

Spence,
That's an ingenious fix for the problem.

I have done the same in loosing my lid... Very good idea! Actually just finished installing a box on my latest build yesterday. I definitely will be doing this for good measure, thanks for sharing your idea.

Did the same thing with mine when I got my first rifle with a sliding wood patchbox cover. Can't remember where I heard of the idea. Trying to match up a lost cover would be a major pain. Great photos thanks for posting.
