This knife is loosely based on an early 19th c. Spanish trade knife in the Museum of the Fur Trade. While stylistically and dimensionally similar, mine features ebony scales, whereas the originals were buffalo horn. The thought was to anglicize it a bit. Whereas English cutlers would not have had easy access to buffalo horn, they could - and routinely did - utilize African hardwoods for handles. The very subtle upsweep of the spine is also typical English mid 18th c.
