Let's also remember the animal skins, bladders and coopered casks/rundlets/canteens that could also be used. Going without and suffering from thirst was also period....
Geography might also be a significant factor - the Eastern US seems to be generously supplied with water-sources, while the West where I live can be a dry, unfriendly place.

At 8 lbs per gallon, water is just heavy.... Agreed, water is I would say the heaviest individual item we carry, even heavier than lead. But the facts are & were, that we can only survive for roughly three days without water, depending on our activity level & the weather. It is also a fact that many woodsrunners did not survive, we only hear about the ones that survived long enough to make a name for themselves! Keith.
