I, too, was a little puzzled by the lack of a keeper - and frankly by the apparent use of a simple roller buckle with no center bar. I don't think that necessarily means that it was inaccurately rendered by the artist, however. After all, the quality of the portrait is first rate, and must have cost a pretty penny as well.
A clumsy replacement for a damaged / worn out family heirloom, perhaps?

I mentioned the position of that buckle in my reply questioning it being a belt pouch for a larger person, maybe being used as a shoulder pouch. Now, if the entire belt can slide through the loops, or rings, like a waist belt, even worn on the shoulder the buckle can be located for best comfort and convenience.

Could it belong to someone else and only be getting used as a prop for the picture?

A clumsy replacement for a damaged / worn out family heirloom, perhaps? Possibly, but I'm wondering/thinking something else. I wonder if that shot pouch and flask was worn by the servant who accompanied Sir Edward and loaded his fowling piece for him, but was added to the portrait for effect? This could explain a Shot Pouch that is not up to the standards of Sir Edwards clotheing, even if he never wore that expensive of a suit of clothes in the field. Landed Gentry almost always had at least their Game Keeper with them on the hunt and more affluent ones would have additional servants for this and other chores. Gus

Not sure about a waist belt used for a shoulder belt, as it seems as a waist belt, it would have to have been for a "very rotund fellowe." However, notice what is an almost unheard of large number of adjustment holes in the shoulder belt? I think this may back up Pararanger's thinking it could have been a strap made for something else and then used on the hunting pouch. I'm scratching my head raw trying to think of what kind of harness strap would have had that many adjustment holes, though. Gus
