The reasons are very hard to articulate. We can all touch on a few things that attracted us to this hobby, but the fundamental essence is almost impossible to verbalize...

Thank you for sharing this video Spence, I think at this time when we are faced with the very real threat of anthropogenic global warming & climate change, this is a good video to watch. Right now the government is prioritising the economy & the need for electricity, & that is likely to cause society to collapse within the next few decades, & the human race could go extinct within the next 100 years. If everyone was prepared to step back into an 18th century lifestyle, we could avoid these coming tragic disasters. Regards, Keith.

Spence, Much appreciate you taking the time to post this video. I think it delves deeper than the campfire question of, "So, why do you do this?" I don't know that we can get what they had back but as Mr Townsend said in not so many words, we can experience parts of it and hopefully carry what we learn back into our modern lives and if we're VERY lucky, find others that would want to do the same and show them the way.

One reason that stands tall for me.
Being able to try and walk in the footsteps of real men.
All to often in today's world I see so called "men" acting more like woman. Feelings get hurt, not wanting to work, have more sugar and cream with their coffee and not drinking it black...
The men who forged their way forward in this country were indeed IMO real, no flakes or fakes. Your very life was dependent on your skillset amongst the unpredictable wild. Even when equipped with the best gear and wilderness knowledge things went south and still do today.
The allure of potentially getting a small glimpse of what was felt, thought, smelled and the like takes me away from a modern world of flakes and fakes and into something that cannot be tamed or explained without the experience.
