canoes on the southern frontier

Canoes are mentioned quite often in the writings about the frontier days, both dugout and bark types. I don't know that the classic birch bark canoe we are familiar with was used in the more southern areas, but Nicholas Cresswell mentions both walnut dugouts and hickory bark canoes.

I'm a fan of Jon Townsend's videos, and he shows building both dugout and bark canoes as they would have been done in the day. Those videos are very interesting and educational. Here are links to them, I hope I kept them in the right order as I pasted them in. If not, work it out,
