Anyone else study or have a strong interest in other periods of history? Not necessarily reenacting, or living history, or experimental/experiential archeology. Just an event or periods you like to study or read about?
For me there are two. Rhodesia. And U.S. involvement in Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam war. This one due to some personal connections.

I'm a science nerd - my interests tend to be wide and I tend to read whatever catches my eye. I also have an interest in 18/19th century medicine, the L&C period, Wilderness survival skills, Plains Indian tribes and wild plant foods/medicine.

Oddly, to some, my interest in early American history ends fairly abruptly after the revolutionary period. Many seem to have an intense interest in the War Between the States, or "Civil War," or whichever of many names you choose. I have almost no interest, much to the chagrin of an acquaintance, author Matthew Warshauer, a friend of a late close family friend. The Rocky Mountain/Western fur trade never held much interest. My interest in WWII doesn't extend much beyond the involvement of my grandparents and some great uncles, one of whom was a tank commander who received the Medal of Honor. Another great uncle's unit was used as extras in the original version of the movie "Sahara," before deployment to Europe. As nazi soldiers. He was one of the 1st into one of the concentration camps and always swore that he never would have put on that uniform even for a movie if he had known what he would find there. Though he did like to tell how he helped Bogart win a bet during filming.
I was somewhat interested in Japanese history for a while, that interest faded. Studied Native American culture and lifestyle and "primitive skills " for a bit.
Always interested in Africa, the animals, the geography, the land itself. Then Col. Cooper sparked my interest in Rhodesia, and it stuck. Maybe because I saw, and still see parallels with our Vietnam experience, and am seeing frightening parallels to things I see happening here now and possibly more so in the immediate future.
Laos, Cambodia, Thailand? Friends throughout my life with some connection here, either as Americans involved or as friends who's families survived and escaped Cambodia and Laos.
I guess I've rambled enough.

I have a fond interest of staying out of trouble with my redhead wife.
Really seems all my interests come full circle back to my fascination of the 18th century, particularly the seven years war and revolution up to the war of 1812. My main focus indeed is fixed on this area but I enjoy all aspects of history from biblical times to WWII and on.

Actually, I not only stayed awake, I found this quite interesting. Of course, I wouldn't have disagreed with your conclusion to begin with, so my mind didn't need changing.

It's hard to believe it has been over a decade. Believe it or not, it was considered somewhat controversial at the time. In hindsight, Looking back at two decades of strategic failures, it seems more tame to me. Perhaps even obvious?
