Great stuff. Good for you. Who's the young rosey checked boy in the pics?

Excellent, I'm happy for you. You earned it, and that surely feels very good.

The fire was rather hot resulting in rosey red cheeks! Oh gentleman I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to roast in the cabin. Just felt right on all accounts. Talked with the curator about working to help restore areas that need addressed on the structure, which I'm very much looking forward to getting involved with.

Bravo, Hawkeyes! Superb pictures as well. Wish I could've pulled a chair up to the fire for a cup or two! Thanks for sharing.

Your post brings back good memories, Hawkeyes. Many years ago my wife and I took a class in down hearth cooking at a historic site in Louisville, Kentucky, Riverside Landing, the Farnsley-Mormon house. It wasn't a reenacting activity, just a cooking class. The site is from 1837, but it was in a detached kitchen building and had a fireplace set up for cooking. That is the only time I was ever able to use such a setup, with crane, chain, S-hooks, extended hearth, etc. I built and tended the fire, managed the embers for the dutch ovens, etc. We cooked a full meal, stew, biscuits, applesauce cake and apple pie, all in dutch ovens and kettles. All the required tools were provided, the system was amazingly efficient, and I had an absolute ball. One of the best things my wife and I ever got involved in. Food was excellent, too. Spence

I see that I had posted the info and pictures about my hearth cooking before. I thought I had done it on that other forum.
Mea Culpa Maxima. Getting old isn't for sissies.

Fabulous images! Something truly can be said from doing work over the hearth, an amazing experience that never is forgotten! I can smell the food! Absolutely delicious I'd reckon!

Looks like a neat place, and a fun day, and I know the coffee is great!

Hawkeyes, all that you do, you do well. I would love right now to have a mug of your coffee, and a biscuit or two of Spence's.
The perfect photo for this thread would be of you, as pictured, pouring a coffee for Spence, in all his hunting finery, and a certain Native American warrior bearing a strong resemblance to the man pouring the coffee. Oh well, it's in my imagination.
Congratulations! Yet again, you have pulled it off. Much effort, well rewarded.
