Currently reading, "The First American Cookbook, a facsimile of American Cookery by Amelia Simmons"
Very much recommend it. The beginning of the book, before it even gets to the work of the original author, is alone worth the price of admission especially combined with the author's own forward. The recipes are interesting enough, but I think the description of the author's world, and then her instructions on choosing meats and produce are far more valuable.
